Chapter 9 - THE RECORDING THAT COULD END HER

No one spoke after the audio ended.
I had imagined confronting my mother a thousand times.
In every version, I shouted.
In reality, I sat perfectly still.
Naomi touched the table.
âSamuel, this is powerful evidence, but defense counsel will attack authenticity. We need corroboration.â
Catherine spoke from the doorway.
âI can give you one.â
We turned.
She held a folded piece of paper.
âAt Hawthorne Ridge, Daria visited me twice. The second time, she was angry. She said Thomas should have learned not to threaten her.â
âExact words?â Naomi asked.
Catherine nodded.
âShe said, âYour father-in-law made the same mistake. He thought truth mattered more than survival.ââ
Naomi wrote it down.
Then another problem surfaced.
Dr. Weston.
The dentist who falsified Catherineâs identification was alive and living under another name in Arizona.
Federal agents found him that afternoon.
He refused to talk.
Until they showed him Nolanâs messages.
Then he asked for a lawyer.
By evening, Dariaâs attorneys filed an emergency motion accusing me of attempting a hostile takeover while mentally unstable.
The story hit financial news within minutes.
SAMUEL KINCAID SUFFERS BREAKDOWN.
I laughed when I saw the headline.
Catherine did not.
âSheâs building a story.â
âI know.â
âIf she can make people think youâre unstable, sheâll say you invented everything.â
âI know.â
Penelope began crying in the next room.
Catherine went to her.
I watched my wife lift our daughter and felt something shift inside me.
For two years, Daria had controlled the narrative.
Now I had something she could not rewrite.
Living witnesses.
Then Luis entered.
âSir, we have a problem.â
He placed a tablet on the table.
Security footage from the hospital.
Marcusâs floor.
A nurse entered his room.
Seven minutes later, she came out quickly.
When hospital staff checked Marcus, he was unconscious.
Someone had injected something into his IV.
Naomi grabbed her phone.
âIs he alive?â
âFor now.â
The fake nurse had vanished.
But before leaving, she dropped one thing beside Marcusâs bed.
May you like
A white pearl earring.
The kind my mother wore every day.
