Chapter 17 - The Full Recording

Ryan's lawyer delivered a storage drive to Naomi's office under a written agreement governing its handling. Ryan had kept a full copy of the dining-room camera footage on the tablet he used for work. His attorney said he intended to cooperate with preservation requests.
The recording was eleven minutes long.
At first Lily sat in her high chair eating pasta. Diane took her plate away after she dropped a spoon. Lily reached for the food, confused. Ryan stood near the refrigerator, watching.
"She's two," he said. "Just let her finish."
Diane answered, "If you want the court to see a mother who can't keep a child fed, we need pictures showing how thin and desperate she is. Your wife won't get to play hero forever."
Ryan didn't walk out. He didn't take the plate back. When Diane put food under the table and told Lily to pick it up, he lifted his phone and photographed her.
I had spent days praying he was weak rather than cruel. Hearing the difference no longer helped.
Halfway through the recording, Lily looked toward him and said, "Daddy, please."
He turned the camera toward her.
I covered my mouth. Naomi paused the video until I could breathe. No courtroom could give those eleven minutes back to my daughter. No settlement could rewrite the part where her father heard her and kept filming.
The file also captured Diane describing the plan: document a pattern of neglect, secure sole custodial authority for Ryan, then convince the trustee to approve Westbrook's supposed support services. She bragged that Lily's trust had enough money to save the whole family.
"Arthur made it impossible to take it directly," she told Ryan. "So we make them pay for what we say she needs."
Naomi called Judith's counsel to arrange preservation of the original file. She then phoned the investigator handling the suspected fraud.

Before she could finish explaining, someone knocked on her office door.
It was Ryan, without his lawyer, saying he had come to confess.
