Chapter 19 - The Last Lie

Ryan told his attorney what he had hidden: after Arthur's death, Diane had tried to persuade Malcolm Greer to witness a backdated amendment. When Malcolm refused, Ryan copied a sample of the man's signature from an old contract and put it on the new paperwork himself.

He had also drafted the threatening note sent to Naomi, hoping fear would make me drop the custody fight. I had imagined Diane everywhere because she had taught her son how to make another person's fear useful. But this decision was his.

"I thought if I scared you enough, you'd just come back," he said during the supervised exchange arranged for a later date.

"You weren't asking me to come back," I replied. "You were asking me to stop protecting Lily."

He cried. I believed the tears were real. I no longer believed they changed what he'd done.

The financial investigation continued for months. Westbrook's accounts were frozen where permitted, and Judith's office pursued recovery of improper payments. Prosecutors eventually filed fraud-related charges against Ryan and Diane, leaving those allegations to be tested in court. The trust remained under independent control, with stricter checks on future claims. It belonged to Lily, not to any adult who claimed to speak for her.

Diane sent letters saying she was misunderstood, then furious, then lonely. I gave them to Naomi. I didn't read most of them. A person could be lonely and still be dangerous to your peace.

My employer completed its review without finding support for the allegations about drugs or patient care. I returned to a more manageable shift schedule. Tessa continued helping with pickups, and Lily's daycare learned that she liked grapes cut into little pieces and hated loud hand dryers.

On a rainy Thursday, Lily asked why Daddy could only see her with another grown-up nearby.

"Because grown-ups have to show they can keep you safe," I said. "And sometimes they need help learning how."

She thought about it. "Do you need help?"

"Sometimes. That's why I ask."

Lily nodded gravely. "I can help with cake."

Her third birthday was two days away, and I finally knew exactly what she meant.
