Chapter 8 - The First Hearing

Ryan arrived in court wearing the gray tie I bought him for our fifth anniversary. Diane sat beside him, her hand resting on his arm as though he were the one who needed protection.

His lawyer described me as an exhausted nurse who left her daughter for long stretches. Naomi answered with work rosters, bank transfers, Lily's medical records, and the photographs I'd taken at Diane's house. She didn't play the video immediately. She first established who Iris was, when it was made, and why it mattered.

On the screen, Ryan's voice filled the courtroom: "Let her pick it up. Then take the picture."

He stared straight ahead. Diane leaned toward her attorney, who raised an objection about the recording's completeness. The judge asked Naomi to preserve the full source and said the competing allegations required investigation.

The temporary order kept Lily primarily with me while the case was pending. Ryan would have professionally supervised contact. Diane was not approved to supervise or attend those visits. The judge also directed both sides to preserve relevant messages, recordings, and financial documents.

It wasn't a final victory. I understood that when Naomi squeezed my elbow outside the courtroom.

"The investigation matters now," she said. "You still have to show up for every hearing."

Ryan caught me by the elevator. "You made me look like a monster."

"You made Lily crawl for food."

"Mom told me it would only be a few pictures."

He looked as though he hadn't meant to say that. I took a step closer.

"And when did you decide that was acceptable?"

His answer never came. His phone rang, and the caller's name flashed across the screen: MR. KELLER - FINAL NOTICE.

I watched Ryan turn away, trembling, and finally understood that the pictures weren't the only thing he was afraid of.
