Chapter 10 - The Hidden Phone

The old phone was the only object Mom had insisted we keep. It sat on the table beside my bed, its cracked screen glowing faintly when Arthur charged it.
"Why did it only have Grandpa's number?" I asked.
"Because I didn't want you to have to choose who to call," Mom said. "I wanted one person who would answer, no matter what."
Arthur looked uncomfortable at that. "I should have made sure you had more than one way to reach help."
"You gave me one that worked."
He smiled sadly, then asked if he could check the phone's call history. There was only the call I had made during the attack, but the device had an old voicemail stored in its memory.
Mom went still when she heard the date.
"It was recorded the night I left the first time," she said.
Arthur played it on speaker. A man's voice came through, muffled but clear enough to recognize.
Peter Lang.
"Sarah, don't go to the police station. Daniel knows what you're planning. Meet me at the east entrance and bring the original files. I can get you somewhere safe."
Then another voice spoke in the background.
Daniel.
"Tell her the girl stays with us."
The voicemail ended.
I looked at Mom. "They wanted to take me?"
Mom's face crumpled. "They wanted to use you to make me cooperate."
Arthur paused the recording and made a copy for Investigator Brooks. He told us not to replay it again until the evidence team had secured the phone.
But the final words kept echoing in my head.
The girl stays with us.
I wasn't a person to them. I was a bargaining chip.
Later that night, a staff member brought dinner. She set the tray down, then quietly slipped a folded note beneath my napkin.
I opened it after she left.
