Chapter 9 - The Lawyer in the Driveway

The sedan sped away before the officers reached the front door. Investigator Brooks sent the plate number to dispatch, then ordered us back into the secure vehicle.
"His lawyer isn't charged with anything," she said. "But he has no reason to be at a house under police control."
Mom looked as if she might be sick. "His name is Peter Lang. He drafted the first protection agreement."
Arthur's eyes narrowed. "You never told me that."
"Because I thought he was helping us."
On the ride to the safe location, Mom explained that Lang had been assigned to help prepare her statement after she discovered the false invoices. He had arranged meetings, passed messages between her and the investigators, and told her which documents mattered most.
Then, just before the warehouse case was scheduled to go to court, he advised her to withdraw her statement. He said the evidence was weak and that she would lose custody of me if she continued.
"I believed him," Mom whispered. "For two days."
"What changed?" I asked.
"He called Daniel by his first name. Not Mr. Cole. Not the company's director. Daniel. Like they were old friends."
She had left the meeting and gone straight to Arthur.
Arthur's face tightened with regret. "I should have checked Lang's background myself."
"You were trying to keep us alive," Mom said. "You can't carry every mistake."
The safe location was a small government-owned house with reinforced locks and plain curtains. There were no family pictures, no personal items, nothing that would tell a stranger who lived there.
That night, Investigator Brooks brought a printout of Lang's financial records. A consulting company had paid him for three years. The company was registered to a mailbox and had no listed employees.
Its name was Bellmark Advisory.
Mom stared at the page.
"That's where the missing money went," she said.
Arthur looked up sharply.
"How do you know?"
May you like
Mom pointed to a transaction code beside the company's name.
"Because I wrote that code into the original ledger."
