Chapter 4 - Why We Disappeared

The paramedics wanted to take Mom to the hospital, and Deputy Alvarez insisted I go with her. Arthur rode in the front seat of the second ambulance car, while another officer stayed behind to collect evidence.
I kept looking at Mom's hands. She had wrapped them around mine and hadn't let go once.
"Why did we have a protected address?" I asked.
She stared at the passing streetlights. "Because I learned something about your father that I wasn't supposed to know."
"What thing?"
"Not tonight, sweetheart."
I hated that answer. It sounded like every other answer adults gave when they wanted children to stop asking questions. But this time, Mom looked afraid of the truth, not annoyed by me.
At the hospital, a nurse checked my cheek and asked whether I felt dizzy. I said no, though I was still seeing the kitchen in flashes: the running water, Dad's hand, Mom's frightened eyes.
Arthur waited in the hallway until Mom asked him to come in.
"Daniel found them because someone leaked the address," he said. "We need to know who."
Mom's mouth tightened. "The same people who told him I had copied the records."
"What records?" I asked.
Arthur looked at her, silently asking permission.
Mom took a breath. "Your father worked for a company that handled security contracts for the city. I was in charge of billing. I found payments that didn't match any real work. When I asked about them, Daniel told me to forget what I'd seen."
"And you didn't."
"No."
She explained that she had copied files showing fake invoices and money sent through shell companies. One set of records connected the company to a fatal warehouse fire that officials had called an accident.
"Your father wasn't just afraid of losing his job," she said. "He was afraid someone would go to prison."
Arthur placed a second folder on the bed.
"There's more," he said. "The original witness-protection order was approved because Sarah was the only person who could identify who changed the fire inspection records."

He turned to me.
"And your father has just found out the case is still alive."
