Chapter 5 - A House Full of Lies

By sunrise, the police had moved Mom and me to a secure family room in the hospital. Arthur stood near the door, speaking quietly with a state investigator named Lena Brooks.

Dad had been taken to the station for questioning, but he hadn't been charged yet. Deputy Alvarez explained that the officers needed statements, medical records, and the original protective-order documents before they could decide what came next.

I wanted them to take him away forever. I hated even more that part of me still wanted him to walk into the room and tell me this was all a mistake.

Both feelings lived inside me, fighting for space.

Mom noticed me watching the door. "You don't have to choose what you feel about your father today."

"He hit me."

"I know."

"He hurt you."

"I know, Emily."

"Then why do I still want him to say he's sorry?"

Mom's eyes filled. "Because he's your dad. Loving someone doesn't turn off just because they hurt you. But love doesn't mean you have to let them hurt you again."

Arthur heard her. He looked away to give us privacy, and that small kindness made me trust him more than I expected.

Later, Investigator Brooks asked Mom about the night she first contacted authorities. Mom described leaving our old house with one suitcase, sleeping in a motel under another name, and learning to recognize the sound of a car that circled the block twice.

"We were supposed to be safe," she said.

"You were," Brooks replied. "Until someone inside the system betrayed the address."

Arthur set his jaw. "We need the access log."

Brooks nodded. "And we need to know who had a reason to pull it."

Mom looked at the red folder on the bedside table.

"Daniel wasn't the only one who wanted those records buried," she said.

Then she looked straight at Arthur.

"Your son had help from someone in your old office."
