Chapter 11 - The Cut Brake Line

The garage footage lasted only twenty-eight seconds.
It was enough.
Victoria leaned over the open engine compartment while Grant blocked the camera with his body. For six seconds, the view disappeared behind his coat.
Then he moved.
Victoria was crouched near the driver's side wheel.
The wire cutters were gone.
At 10:09, Emma entered the garage.
She looked furious.
There was no audio, but Nathan could read the shape of her anger. She pointed toward the house. Grant raised both hands. Victoria said something. Emma shoved past them and climbed into the car.
At the garage opening, Victoria grabbed the door.
Emma pulled away.
Ten minutes later, her brakes failed on Hawthorne Ridge.
Ruiz watched the clip twice.
"We need the original file and server records."
"Arrest her," Nathan said.
"We're getting warrants. I want a case that survives court."
Nathan hated that she was right.
By afternoon, officers reached Victoria's condo.
Empty.
Her passport was gone. Closet half cleared. Laptop missing.
Grant's house was empty too.
His truck was found at the airport.
But airport cameras showed he never entered a terminal.
"They're not flying," Ruiz said. "They're running by car."
Nathan took the children home under police protection.
He wanted them in familiar beds. He wanted one normal dinner.
At 8:40 p.m., Lily came into the kitchen holding Emma's old red notebook.
"Daddy, there's something under the paper."
She peeled the inside cover gently.
A thin memory card dropped onto the counter.
Nathan stared at it.
Ruiz had said the locker recorder was missing its card.
Lily whispered, "Mommy hid it."
Nathan inserted it into his laptop.
There was one audio file.
The recording began inside a moving car.
Emma was breathing fast.
Then she said, "My brakes aren't working."
A second later, another engine roared close behind her.
May you like
Emma screamed one name.
"Victoria!"
