Chapter 18 - Victoria Finally Told the Truth

Victoria had fallen through the rotted boards of an old footbridge.

She landed six feet below in shallow mud, badly bruised but alive.

Officers pulled her out in handcuffs.

Nathan held Lily so tightly she finally whispered, "Daddy, I can't breathe."

He loosened his arms and laughed through tears.

"Sorry. Sorry, sweetheart."

At the hospital, Victoria asked for a lawyer.

Then she changed her mind when federal agents arrived with the financial records.

She wanted a deal.

Ruiz let Nathan hear only what was legally appropriate later, after formal interviews were completed.

Victoria admitted the theft had begun years earlier when she used Emma's credentials to cover personal debt. Grant discovered it and joined instead of reporting her. Together they created fake vendors, forged Nathan's signatures, and moved millions.

Emma found the pattern.

She gave Victoria one chance to return the money and confess.

Victoria chose something else.

She cut the brake line.

Grant followed Emma in another vehicle, planning to force her to stop before she reached police. When Emma kept driving, Victoria rammed her twice.

The second impact sent Emma through the guardrail.

"Why frame me?" Nathan asked Ruiz later.

"Because you were perfect. Your signatures were already in their system. Grieving husband. Business owner. Financial pressure. If the theft surfaced, they wanted the story ready."

Nathan looked through the interview-room window at Victoria.

"And Lily?"

Ruiz's jaw tightened.

"Victoria believed Emma encrypted a final ledger. She thought Lily knew the password."

Lily did know part of it.

That night, safe at home, she finished the old bedtime phrase.

"Red light, blue sky, seven stars, two hearts."

Nathan typed: REDLIGHTBLUESKY7STARS2HEARTS.

A hidden folder opened on Emma's memory card.

Inside was the complete ledger.

And one final video addressed to Nathan and the children.
