Chapter 15 - The Lie Buried Under Emma's Name

Nathan burst into the interview room before anyone could stop him.

"Don't you say her name like that."

Grant didn't flinch.

Ruiz stood. "Nathan, get out."

"He just accused my dead wife of theft."

Grant looked exhausted. "I'm telling you what Victoria told me."

"Victoria lies."

"Yes. That's the problem. She lies with real documents."

Ruiz stepped between them.

"Nathan. Outside. Now."

Ten minutes later, she joined him in the hallway.

"I need you calm enough to hear this."

"Hear what?"

"Some of the earliest transfers do predate Victoria's official role."

Nathan stared at her.

"So Grant is right?"

"No. It means we verify. We don't worship the story we want."

That sentence hurt because Emma would have said the same thing.

Archived bank records gave them the answer.

The earliest forged approvals used Emma's login, but they came from Victoria's old accounting firm.

"There's more," Ruiz said. "Emma found the theft eighteen months before she died and quietly reimbursed the foundation from her inheritance while she investigated."

Nathan finally understood why Emma had sold her grandmother's lake cabin.

"She was trying to put the money back."

"Yes. And she documented every dollar."

Ruiz slid a scanned letter across the desk.

Emma had written it to a federal investigator but never mailed it.

Victoria is using Nathan's company data to create fake vendors. Grant knows more than he admits. I believe one of them has been inside our house when we were away.

At the bottom, Emma added one final line.

If Victoria realizes Lily heard us, my daughter may be in danger.

Nathan's phone rang.

Megan.

He answered.

May you like

Her voice was hysterical.

"Nathan, Lily is gone."
