Chapter 20 - Louder Than the Fear

Eight months later, Nathan stood barefoot on a beach in North Carolina while Noah tried to build a wall strong enough to stop the Atlantic Ocean.

It failed every thirty seconds.

Noah rebuilt it every time.

Lily laughed as another wave destroyed his fortress.

That sound mattered more to Nathan than any verdict ever could.

The verdicts had come anyway.

Victoria pleaded guilty to murder, kidnapping, fraud, and conspiracy. Grant received a long federal sentence for conspiracy, fraud, obstruction, and his role in Emma's death.

Daniel testified. Nathan had not fully forgiven him, but he was trying.

The Emma Hale Foundation recovered most of the stolen money, and Nathan rebuilt its board with independent oversight.

Lily chose the first new program.

Counseling for children who had witnessed violence and were afraid nobody would believe them.

She called it The Red Light Project.

One evening, as the sky turned orange, Lily sat beside Nathan in the sand.

"Do you still miss Mommy every day?"

"Every day."

"Me too."

They watched Noah chase a gull and immediately regret it when three more gulls chased him back.

Lily smiled.

"I used to think remembering that night made me bad. Victoria told me if I talked, you'd get hurt."

Nathan took her hand.

"Remembering didn't hurt us. Her lies did."

"Mommy said my voice could shake."

"It can."

"And I can still tell the truth."

"Always."

A wave rolled in hard enough to wash over their feet.

Lily jumped up, laughing.

Nathan looked out at the water and thought of Emma's last note.

The ocean was loud.

Louder than the courtroom.

Louder than Victoria's threats.

Louder than the crash he had imagined in his nightmares for almost two years.

Behind him, his children were arguing about who had stolen whose plastic shovel.

It was ordinary.

Messy.

Alive.

Nathan closed his eyes for one second and let the sound fill him.

Then Lily shouted, "Daddy, come on!"

He turned toward them.

May you like

And this time, he did not look back.

THE END
