Chapter 19 - Emma's Last Message

Nathan waited until Lily and Noah asked to watch it.

He did not decide for them.

They sat together on the living room floor under the same blanket Emma used during movie nights.

Nathan pressed play.

Emma appeared on screen at her desk, tired but smiling.

"Hi, my loves. If you're seeing this, then something went wrong, or I finally became organized enough to show you my extremely dramatic backup plan. I'm hoping for the second one."

Lily gave a broken little laugh.

Emma's smile softened.

"Nathan, I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner. I thought I could fix this without putting the company, the foundation, or the kids in danger. That was pride. I should have trusted you with the truth."

Nathan stared at her face.

For eleven months, his memories of Emma ended with police lights and a burned car.

Now she was alive on a screen for six more minutes.

She told Noah she loved his dinosaur facts.

She told Lily that being brave did not mean staying quiet.

"Brave means telling the truth even when your voice shakes."

Lily leaned against Nathan.

Then Emma looked directly into the camera.

"And Nathan, if Victoria tries to make you doubt yourself, don't. You are not responsible for choices other people make in secret. Protect the kids. Tell them I fought to come home."

Nathan stopped the video because he could no longer see through the tears.

Noah climbed into his lap.

"Mommy knew we'd find it."

"Yeah," Nathan whispered. "She did."

Lily was quiet for a long time.

Then she walked to the coffee table and picked up the red notebook.

"Daddy?"

"What is it?"

She opened the last page.

Under the line about locker 214, faint writing showed through where two pages had once stuck together.

Nathan held it under the lamp.

Emma had written one more sentence.

Nathan, when this is over, take them somewhere the ocean is louder than the fear.
