Chapter 1 - The Dead Man at the Door

“Daddy?”

The word was barely louder than the rain.

Roman Calder stopped in Helena Ward’s marble entryway. Six-year-old Sophie stood ten feet away, hugging a stuffed rabbit. Her face had gone white.

“Daddy?” she whispered again. “Grandma said you were dead.”

Behind her, Nora stared at Roman as if she had seen a ghost.

Roman had survived twenty-eight months in a foreign detention center after bribery charges he swore were planted. He had spent the last five months clearing his name and finding a way home. He expected anger. He did not expect his daughter to believe he had been buried.

“No, sweetheart,” he said. “I’m alive.”

Helena’s expression changed first. Not grief. Calculation.

She backed toward the private stone corridor.

“Mom?” Nora said.

Helena ran.

Marco Velez stepped into Roman’s path and swung. Roman slipped the punch and drove one hard counter across Marco’s jaw. Marco crashed over a vintage map table, sending brass tubes across the floor.

Roman sprinted after Helena.

She reached the old archive vault and punched in a code. The lock flashed green. Roman caught the heavy door before she could close it.

Inside were shelves of sealed boxes, monthly cash packets, birthday gifts, children’s clothes, and letters in Roman’s handwriting.

Three years of everything he had sent to Nora and Sophie.

Untouched.

Nora reached the doorway. “Oh my God.”

Roman lifted Sophie into one arm and pulled down the first box.

“You locked three years of my daughter’s life in here.”

Helena looked at Marco in terror.

But Marco wasn’t looking at the money.

He was staring at the date on the box.

October 14.

Roman noticed. “What happened on October fourteenth?”

Marco said nothing.

Roman ripped the box open.

On top was an official death certificate.
