Chapter 16 - The Birth Certificate

Brooks arrested Kerr after a tense twenty-minute standoff.
No one was hurt.
But his last sentence followed Roman upstairs.
Nora pulled Sophie’s certified birth record from a secure digital file.
There it was.
An amendment dated two days after delivery.
Father: Roman Elias Calder.
The line had originally been blank.
Roman looked at Nora.
“Why?”
She shook her head. “I don’t know.”
Helena asked to speak with them.
From behind detention glass, she looked exhausted.
“Kerr told me Roman’s legal problems could put the baby’s trust at risk. He said leaving the father blank for forty-eight hours would protect Sophie until the paperwork cleared.”
Roman stared at her. “And you agreed?”
“I was in the delivery room. Nora was unconscious after surgery. I signed the temporary forms.”
Nora’s voice cracked. “You signed my child’s papers while I was unconscious?”
Helena lowered her head.
The amendment itself was legal once Roman later acknowledged paternity. But the blank period had allowed Kerr to create a second internal birth file—one tied to a shell identity.
Brooks found it in his records.
That false identity had been used to obtain a passport for Sophie.
The conspiracy had been preparing an exit route since the day she was born.
Roman felt sick.
“How long was this planned?”
Helena whispered, “Longer than I knew.”
Brooks entered with another document recovered from Kerr’s apartment.
It was a contract dated eight years earlier.
Before Sophie.
Before Roman’s arrest.
Before Northstar Holdings.
The contract paid Dr. Kerr to provide “medical leverage regarding Calder succession.”
