Chapter 17 - Elias’s Last Mistake

Roman stared at his father’s signature until the letters blurred.

“My father started this?”

Daniel, brought in under guard for questioning, looked equally stunned.

Helena shook her head. “Elias never wanted anyone hurt.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Thomas Ward, recovering from the cemetery shooting, joined by video.

He recognized the contract.

“Elias hired Kerr to investigate whether Helena and Marco were manipulating Nora’s fertility care,” Thomas said. “He suspected they were planning to control the inheritance.”

Roman looked back at the page.

“So ‘medical leverage’ meant evidence.”

“At first,” Thomas said. “Kerr turned it into blackmail.”

That was the pattern. Elias had tried to control a dangerous situation in secret. Daniel had tried to earn a secret place in the family. Helena had tried to protect Nora with secret lies. Every hidden decision had become someone else’s weapon.

Roman closed the file.

“No more secrets.”

Brooks agreed to release the full evidence chain to prosecutors and family counsel.

The indictments came quickly.

Kerr faced kidnapping conspiracy, drugging allegations, fraud, identity crimes, and obstruction.

Pike resigned before federal bribery charges were filed.

Marco faced fraud, kidnapping, conspiracy, and attempted flight.

Daniel faced attempted murder, conspiracy, and financial crimes.

Helena accepted a plea agreement requiring full cooperation.

Then prosecutors reopened Elias Calder’s death investigation.

Toxicology was impossible after twelve years, but the old dining staff records produced a witness.

A server remembered Daniel near Elias’s drink.

Daniel admitted he had added powder.

Roman’s face went still.

“What was it?”

Daniel whispered, “Heart medication.”

“Why?”

“I thought it would make him sick enough to delay signing me out of the trust.”

Roman asked the only question that mattered.

“Did you know it could kill him?”

May you like

Daniel began to cry.

“Yes.”
