Chapter 14 - The Doctor

Dr. Samuel Kerr had delivered Sophie, signed Nora’s fertility diagnosis, and testified years later that Roman’s detention stress had made Nora medically unstable.
He had been inside every vulnerable moment of their family.
Brooks found his house empty.
His passport was gone.
Roman stared at the payment records. Kerr had received money from Northstar for almost a decade.
“What else did he do?” Nora asked.
Helena whispered, “I don’t know.”
Nobody believed her anymore.
Then Sophie spoke from the couch.
“I know Dr. Sam.”
Roman turned. “You do?”
“He comes to Grandma’s house.”
Nora closed her eyes.
“The silver-watch man?”
Sophie shook her head. “No. Dr. Sam brings juice.”
Roman looked at the syringe case.
Brooks immediately ordered the vials tested against clinic drugs.
The preliminary match came back within hours: a strong sedative used during minor procedures.
Nora went cold. “He drugged my daughter?”
Brooks said, “We don’t know that yet.”
Sophie touched Nora’s sleeve. “Sometimes Grandma said the juice would help me sleep.”
Roman had to walk away before anger made him stupid.
A citywide alert went out for Kerr.
At 4:17 p.m., airport police found his abandoned car outside a private terminal.
Inside the trunk were forged documents.
One listed Helena as Sophie’s legal guardian.
One listed Nora as mentally incapacitated.
And one was a death certificate prepared for Nora, dated the coming Friday.
Roman read it twice.
Then Brooks handed him a final page.
It was a medical transport authorization.
Destination: Toronto.
Passenger: Sophie Calder.
Authorized physician: Dr. Samuel Kerr.

The plan had never been just to steal the trust.
They were going to erase Nora too.
