Chapter 12 - The First Box Again

The Milwaukee depot caught fire before sunrise.

Fire crews saved part of the records wing. Police rescued Caleb. Marco was found wounded near a loading dock and arrested again.

Daniel surrendered after barricading himself in an archive office.

The original trust was missing.

For twelve hours, everyone assumed Marco had taken it.

Then Sophie solved the problem over cereal.

“Daddy, why did Grandpa put papers in the train?”

Roman looked up. “What train?”

“The little wooden one in Grandma’s vault.”

Roman and Nora stared at each other.

They drove back with Brooks.

The toy train had been packed inside the first box under Roman’s death certificate. Roman opened the wooden engine.

Inside was a folded document wrapped in wax paper.

Elias Calder’s final trust amendment.

Roman read the key clause twice.

Any biological descendant of Elias Calder, acknowledged or later proven, would share equally in a protected family fund for education, healthcare, and housing.

Not company control.

Not voting shares.

Caleb had already been protected.

Daniel had spent years chasing an inheritance his son was entitled to anyway.

When Roman told him at the station, Daniel began crying.

“All this time…”

Roman felt no victory.

“You wanted our father’s name so badly you became the thing he was afraid you would become.”

Daniel looked up. “He gave you everything.”

“No. He gave me secrets.”

Roman stood to leave.

Daniel called after him. “There’s one more thing in that first box.”

Roman stopped.

“What?”

“A false-bottom panel.”

Roman returned to the vault and pried up the wood beneath the train.

Inside was a medical file with Nora’s name on it.

She opened it.

Her face changed instantly.

“These aren’t my records.”
