Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO DIED TWICE
Noah Bennett lived under the name Evan Hart in a small town two hours north of Boston.
He repaired boats.
Noah opened the workshop door and stared at his brother.
"Danny?"
Daniel punched him.
Then hugged him.
Later, with Claire, Ortiz, Ryan, and Lily waiting nearby, Noah told the truth.
He had loved Mara before Daniel met her.
They had one drunken night together after Mara and Daniel briefly broke up.
Mara later reunited with Daniel and believed the baby was his.
Noah never corrected her because he wasn't certain himself.
"When Dad found out there was a chance the baby was mine, he panicked," Noah said. "Grandma's trust treated my first child differently because I was named successor if Daniel refused the company."
Daniel shook his head. "So he erased you."
"He threatened Mara first. Then me."
Ryan stood in the doorway.
Noah saw him.
His face broke.
Ryan did not move.
"You're my dad?" he asked.
Noah's eyes filled. "Biologically, yes."
"That's not what I asked."
Ryan looked at Daniel, then back at Noah.
"Are you my dad?"
Noah swallowed.
"No. Not yet."
Ryan's chin lifted.
"At least you didn't lie."
Noah flinched, but nodded.
Then he reached into a locked drawer and removed a folder.
"Mara contacted me six months ago. We were gathering evidence."
Ortiz opened it.
Bank records.
Clinic payments.
Surveillance logs.
A list of names.
At the bottom was one current entry:
MARA COLE - ST. VINCENT RECOVERY CENTER - ROOM 308.
Daniel grabbed the page.
Noah stopped him.
"There's more."
He turned over the final sheet.
Mara was not listed as a patient.
She was listed as deceased.
