Chapter 6 - THE CRASH THAT NEVER ENDED

The memory card contained a video recorded by Mara three days before she disappeared.
She looked older than Daniel remembered, thinner, tired, but unmistakably alive.
"If you're seeing this," she said, "Conrad found us again."
Daniel sat in a police interview room with Claire on one side and Ryan on the other.
Mara continued.
"Eleven years ago, Conrad offered me money to leave you. I refused. Two days later, Graham followed me from work. He forced my car off Route Nine."
Daniel whispered, "No."
Ryan stared at the screen.
"I woke up in a private clinic. Conrad told me you wanted nothing to do with me or the baby. He said if I contacted you, he'd make sure I lost my son."
Mara held up copies of medical records.
"They changed my name. They staged my death. Graham signed the transfer."
Claire looked at Daniel. "Your brother knew."
Daniel could barely speak. "Graham was twenty-seven."
Old enough to know exactly what he was doing.
The video shifted.
Mara leaned closer to the camera.
"Six months ago, I learned Evelyn Bennett's trust had been activated after her death. Conrad's lawyers were preparing to certify Lily as the eldest grandchild. That's why he found us again."
Ryan reached for Claire's hand without looking at her.
Then Mara said something none of them expected.
"Daniel, do not trust the DNA test if your family controls the lab."
Ortiz paused the video.
"Why would she say that?"
Daniel's phone buzzed.
A message from Graham.
Dad says you've lost your mind. Come home before Claire takes the kids and the company.
Claire read it over his shoulder.
"The kids?"
Daniel frowned.
Graham knew about Ryan.
Before Daniel could answer, a lab technician knocked and handed Ortiz an envelope.
The expedited paternity result had arrived from an independent state lab.
Probability of paternity: 0.00%.
Daniel read it twice.
Ryan's face collapsed.
"No."
Claire whispered, "Daniel..."
Ryan backed away from the table.
"My mom said you were my dad."
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
Then at Ryan's face.
The boy had his eyes.
His crooked left eyebrow.
Even the same small notch in his ear.
Ortiz turned the report over.
On the back, one handwritten note had been added by the lab director.
