Chapter 17 - GRAHAM'S LAST LIE
Graham was awake when Daniel entered his hospital room.
"You followed Mara."
Graham looked toward the police officer outside.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because Dad told me to."
Daniel grabbed the bed rail.
"Wrong answer."
Graham closed his eyes.
"I was protecting them."
"From whom?"
"Miles."
Daniel didn't believe him.
Then Graham asked for his phone.
Police had already copied it.
Ortiz allowed him to open a hidden folder.
Inside were dozens of photographs of Ryan and Mara.
School pickup.
Grocery store.
Baseball field.
But the notes beneath them were not surveillance reports.
MILES AT EAST EXIT. BLACK SUV AGAIN. MARA CHANGED ROUTE SAFELY.
Graham had been tracking Miles.
"I caused the crash eleven years ago," he said. "Dad ordered me to scare her and I did. I lived with that every day."
Daniel's anger did not soften.
"You helped fake her death."
"Yes."
"You helped erase Noah."
"Yes."
"So don't ask me to call you a hero because you got guilty late."
"I'm not."
Graham looked at Ryan in the doorway.
"I'm asking you to know why you saw me."
Ryan said, "You could've told us."
Mara entered behind him.
"I already knew," she said.
She placed a small recorder on Graham's blanket.
"You left this in my mailbox."
Graham's face changed.
It contained audio of Conrad ordering Miles to remove Mara before the trust hearing.
Ortiz listened once.
Then twice.
"That's conspiracy to commit kidnapping," she said.
Graham laughed weakly. "Add it to the pile."
Ryan stepped closer.
"So when I saw your SUV..."
"I was trying to warn you," Graham said.
Ryan looked down.
"I hit Lily for nothing."
Claire knelt beside him.
"You panicked because adults taught you the world was dangerous. You still have to take responsibility. But those are not the same thing."
Ryan nodded, crying now.
Then Lily appeared in the doorway holding Daniel's hand.
Her bandage was smaller.
She walked to Ryan.
He whispered, "I'm sorry."
Lily considered him seriously.
Then she held out a purple marker.
"You can sign my bandage."
Ryan laughed through tears.
Before he could take it, Ortiz's phone rang.

Her face changed.
"Miles escaped transport."
