Chapter 5 - HARBOR STREET

Daniel went to Harbor Street.

He did not go alone.

Ortiz placed a tracker in his shoe while officers staged nearby. Claire stayed with Lily.

The address was an abandoned marine warehouse. Daniel entered with copies of the vault papers.

"Ryan?"

His voice echoed between rusted shelves.

A light snapped on.

Ryan sat tied to a chair.

A man stood behind him.

Daniel recognized him immediately.

Miles Voss.

His father's head of security for fifteen years.

"Miles."

"Put the papers down."

"You kidnapped a child."

Miles smiled without humor. "I retrieve problems."

Ryan's eyes filled with rage.

Daniel set the folder on the floor. "Let him go."

Miles picked it up, glanced inside, then cursed.

"Copies."

Police sirens erupted outside.

Miles grabbed Ryan and pulled a handgun.

Daniel moved before he thought.

He slammed into Miles. The gun fired into the ceiling. Ryan tipped sideways with the chair, screaming through the tape.

Ortiz burst in with officers.

"Drop it!"

Miles fired toward a side door and ran.

Daniel tore the tape from Ryan's mouth.

"Are you hurt?"

Ryan kicked free of the ropes.

"You hit me."

Daniel froze.

Ryan's cheek still held a faint red mark from the slap.

Daniel swallowed. "I did."

"You didn't even ask."

"No."

"You're just like him."

"Like who?"

Ryan's face tightened.

"Grandpa."

Daniel felt the word like a knife.

Before he could answer, Ryan reached into his sock and pulled out a tiny memory card.

"My mom hid this in my shoe."

Ortiz took it.

"What's on it?"

Ryan looked at Daniel.

"She said it proves your dad tried to kill us the first time."

Daniel stared.

"What first time?"

Ryan's voice dropped.

"The crash."

The crash Conrad had told Daniel killed Mara.

The crash that had supposedly killed his unborn child.

Ryan looked toward the warehouse door.

"My mom was driving."

May you like

He swallowed.

"And your brother Graham was in the car behind her."
