Chapter 3 - THE BOX

By midnight, Lily was asleep in a pediatric room with Claire beside her.

Ryan refused to leave the hallway.

Daniel called his father.

Conrad Bennett answered on the fourth ring.

"Daniel? It's after midnight."

"Do you remember Mara Cole?"

Silence.

Not confusion.

Silence.

Daniel's grip tightened around the phone. "I asked you a question."

Conrad exhaled. "You're exhausted. Go home."

"There's a ten-year-old boy at St. Matthew's who says I'm his father."

Another pause.

Then Conrad said, "Do not speak to police until I get there."

That was all Daniel needed.

He hung up.

Claire had stepped into the hall. "He knew."

Daniel nodded.

At 1:20 a.m., Ortiz drove them to Bennett Federal Trust, where the night manager opened the vault.

Box 417 sat behind a steel door.

The brass key turned.

Inside were no jewels, no cash.

Only a stack of letters tied with blue string.

Every envelope was addressed to Daniel.

Every one had been opened.

None had been delivered.

Claire read the first line of the top letter.

Daniel, our son has your eyes.

He had to sit down.

There were hospital records for Mara. A birth certificate for Ryan Cole. Daniel Bennett was listed as father.

And beneath them lay a notarized agreement dated ten years earlier.

Mara had supposedly accepted three million dollars to waive all claims against the Bennett family and never contact Daniel again.

Daniel stared at the signature.

"That isn't hers."

"How do you know?" Ortiz asked.

"Because Mara wrote her R like a K. Always."

Claire lifted another paper.

It was a private investigator's report from six months ago.

SUBJECT: RYAN COLE. STATUS: LOCATED. RISK: HIGH.

The final page contained only one typed sentence.

If the boy reaches Daniel, the trust changes hands.

Ortiz looked at Daniel.

"What trust?"

Daniel went cold.

His grandmother's estate controlled forty-one percent of Bennett Holdings.

The shares passed to the eldest biological grandchild of her eldest son.

Until tonight, everyone believed that child was Lily.

Daniel looked toward the door.

May you like

A shadow moved beneath it.

Someone was standing outside the vault.
