Chapter 11 - EMMA'S SON

Emma's son, Caleb, was twenty-three.

Three years earlier, he had taken a warehouse job through a D'Angelo contractor.

He thought it was ordinary freight work.

By the time he realized some shipments belonged to Salvatore's illegal side business, he was already on payroll records that could make him look involved.

"Salvatore uses paperwork like handcuffs," Emma said.

Vittorio understood too well.

"Did Caleb know what Bianca was doing to Lucy?"

"No."

"Where is he now?"

"He stopped answering yesterday."

Ruiz traced Caleb's company van to a closed trucking yard near Joliet.

Police found the van empty.

On the passenger seat was Caleb's employee badge.

And a note.

EMMA STOPS. CALEB WALKS.

Detective Brooks called it witness intimidation.

Emma called it her fault.

Vittorio refused that.

"Salvatore made the threat. Not you."

They located Caleb that night in a motel under an assumed name.

He had not been kidnapped.

He had run.

"Salvatore told me Mom was working with police," Caleb said. "He said if I stayed, he'd make sure I took the fall for stolen freight."

Caleb had copied company dispatch records before leaving.

Those records showed unusual shipments between Salvatore's warehouse and Dr. Kessler's private clinic.

More important, they showed Marcus authorizing a vehicle transfer four years earlier.

Elena's car.

The night before her crash.

Brooks stared at the record.

"This puts Marcus inside the chain."

Caleb shook his head.

"There's a second ledger. Salvatore keeps it offline."

"Where?" Vittorio asked.

"At the family chapel."

Vittorio almost laughed.

His grandfather had built that chapel so the family would remember God.

Apparently Salvatore used it to remember crimes.

When police opened the chapel safe, the ledger was gone.

But someone had left a photograph inside.

Lucy walking into school.

Taken that morning.
