Chapter 19 - LUCY'S ACCOUNT

The account was not stolen money.
It was Elena's emergency fund.
She had quietly moved legitimate dividends into a protected account for Lucy.
The balance was twelve million dollars.
Salvatore had tried to find it for years and failed because Elena used an independent trustee outside Chicago.
The trustee had been waiting for Lucy's ninth birthday to disclose it.
That explained the urgency.
Salvatore had suspected the account existed.
He needed guardianship before it surfaced.
Vittorio met the trustee with Maya.
"I don't want control of it," he said.
The trustee looked surprised.
"You are her father."
"Exactly. She has enough people trying to turn her money into permission. I won't be one of them."
They kept the account under independent management.
On Lucy's birthday, there was no giant party.
She asked for pancakes, Clara, Emma, Caleb, Ruiz, and a chocolate cake shaped badly like a cat.
Vittorio made the pancakes.
They were terrible.
Lucy ate two anyway.
After cake, Emma gave her a small wrapped box.
Inside was a new brass key.
"What's this?" Lucy asked.
Vittorio answered.
"Your room. New lock. Your key. Nobody enters without knocking unless there's an emergency."
Lucy stared at him.
"Even you?"
"Even me."
She smiled.
The gesture felt small.
It wasn't.
He had grown up in a house where locked doors meant secrets.
He wanted Lucy to grow up knowing a locked door could also mean privacy.
That night, she placed Elena's birthday card beside her bed.
Before sleeping, she asked, "Daddy?"
"Yeah?"
"Are you still scary?"
Vittorio laughed softly.
"Apparently."
"Good."
He raised an eyebrow.
May you like
Lucy pulled the blanket higher.
"Just be scary to the right people."
