Chapter 9 - ELENA'S CALL

Vittorio listened to Elena's old police call alone.

Her voice was careful.

"I may be overreacting, but my husband's uncle has been asking me to change Lucy's trust. He says I'm embarrassing the family."

The dispatcher asked if she had been threatened.

Elena paused.

"Not directly. That's what makes him good at it."

Vittorio closed his eyes.

He had been overseas on business that week.

Marcus had told him Elena was stressed.

Salvatore had called her "dramatic."

Vittorio believed them.

That truth hurt more than the recording.

Brooks reopened the crash investigation.

The original mechanic was still alive.

He remembered Elena's car.

"Nothing wrong with it when it left my shop," he said. "But a man came back that night asking if the car was still there."

"Who?"

The mechanic studied an old photo lineup.

His finger landed on Marcus.

"Him."

Marcus was arrested for questioning.

Bianca hired two lawyers and refused to speak.

Salvatore disappeared.

Then the press received leaked footage from the breakfast room.

Not Emma's video.

The house camera.

A short clip showing only Vittorio shoving Marcus through the map rack and striking Bianca's hand away.

Headline:

CHICAGO SHIPPING HEIR ATTACKS FIANCEE IN FRONT OF CHILD.

Exactly the story they had planned.

Maya called at 6 a.m.

"Do not respond publicly."

"They're calling me dangerous."

"That was always the plan."

At school, reporters waited outside Lucy's gate.

Vittorio pulled her out for the week.

She sat in the back seat of the car reading headlines on a tablet before Emma took it away.

"Daddy?"

"Yeah?"

"Are they going to take me away because you pushed Marcus?"

Vittorio turned around.

"No."

Lucy looked uncertain.

Then she said, "Bianca told me a judge already signed the paper."

Everyone in the car went still.

Maya whispered, "What paper?"

May you like

Lucy answered:

"The one that says Daddy can't keep me."
