Chapter 16 - THE COURTROOM

The emergency guardianship hearing happened ten days before Lucy's birthday.
Not because Salvatore still had a strong case.
Because his attorneys had filed the petition before his arrest.
They argued Vittorio's history made him unstable.
They showed the edited breakfast-room clip.
They showed old photographs of fights from his twenties.
They described his family's criminal reputation.
Maya let them finish.
Then she played Emma's full video.
The courtroom watched Bianca force Lucy toward the bowl.
They watched Marcus laugh.
They watched Vittorio enter only after the abuse was already happening.
Then Maya introduced the deleted-camera logs.
The fake court order.
Kessler's false evaluation.
Bianca's confession.
Marcus's deal proffer.
The warehouse recording.
Finally, a child advocate spoke for Lucy.
Lucy did not have to enter the courtroom.
Her statement was simple.
My dad gets angry sometimes. But he never makes me feel like an animal. Bianca did.
Vittorio looked down.
That sentence would live inside him forever.
The judge denied the guardianship petition permanently.
She ordered independent oversight of Lucy's trust until adulthood.
Vittorio supported it.
That surprised several family members.
It did not surprise Emma.
Outside court, reporters shouted questions.
"Mr. D'Angelo, are you stepping down?"
"From some companies, yes."
"Why?"
Vittorio stopped.
"Because power without oversight is how this happened."
That evening he returned home.
The breakfast room was empty.
The dog bowl was gone.
Lucy stood in the doorway holding it.
Vittorio stiffened.
"Where did you get that?"
She smiled for the first time in days.
"Emma washed it."
"Why?"
May you like
Lucy held up a bag of potting soil.
"We're planting something in it."
