Chapter 10 - The Price of a Life

By Friday, the numbers had names attached.

Forty-two veterans had been approved for home adaptations that were never completed. Some waited in borrowed apartments. One man washed at a neighbor's house because his own bathroom wouldn't fit his wheelchair. Donors had been shown carefully staged photographs of a model home and told the work was nearly done.

Agent Shah walked me through the findings with a forensic accountant. More than $2.3 million in restricted donations had traveled through Jason's company and into private real estate deals, luxury travel, and a vacant building Ethan intended to flip for a profit.

"He's going to tell everyone I approved it," I said.

"He's already tried," Shah replied. "But electronic records show the approvals came from his device while you were away."

I remembered Ethan laughing when I'd asked for a separate bank account. "Why would you need that?" he'd said. "Everything we have is ours."

Everything, apparently, except the right to ask where it went.

The investigators showed me one last record. It was not a grant application.

It was a life-insurance policy.

Seven hundred fifty thousand dollars. On me. Purchased four months earlier. Ethan listed as sole beneficiary.

"I never applied for this," I whispered.

"We know," Shah said. "The insurer is cooperating."

My hand went to June. An insurance policy was not proof that Ethan had intended to kill me. Shah said that plainly. But combined with the forged medical forms and the chair attack, it was another serious question investigators could not ignore.

"Who submitted the paperwork?" Dana asked.

Shah turned the page.

"The application came from a computer registered to Margaret Price."

I thought of Margaret looking away when Ethan raised the chair. I had mistaken her silence for cowardice.

Now I wondered whether she had been waiting for something.

Then Shah slid a second page across the table.

"Claire, this policy wasn't the first one she tried to buy."
