Chapter 7 - What Margaret Brought to the Hospital

I changed every password before sunrise.

Tessa helped me update my emergency contacts and make sure the hospital had my written instructions. My husband would not make medical decisions for me. Tessa would. The nurse checked the paperwork twice and put an alert on my chart.

By lunch, Margaret was standing outside my room.

"I'm her mother," she told the charge nurse.

"You're her mother-in-law," Tessa corrected from the doorway.

Margaret's cheeks reddened. "She's upset. She doesn't know what she's saying."

"I know exactly what I'm saying," I told her. "You need to leave."

She stepped inside anyway, holding an envelope like a peace offering.

"Ethan has always taken care of you. Sign this, and we can make the whole ugly incident go away."

It was a prepared statement claiming I'd slipped and Ethan had tried to catch me. At the bottom was a paragraph describing me as emotionally unstable because of my old combat injuries.

"You're asking me to lie under my own medal," I said.

"I'm asking you to save your marriage."

The nurse called security. Margaret slapped the paper onto my blanket.

"You'll regret turning your baby against us."

"My baby isn't a bargaining chip."

The security officer escorted her out, but the envelope remained. Tessa photographed every page before touching it.

At the back was another document: a purported authorization giving Ethan control if I became incapacitated and recommending Margaret as guardian of any minor child. A notary seal sat beside my forged name. The date was during my rehabilitation after the convoy attack.

Tessa examined the seal. "Claire, do you recognize that notary?"

I didn't. But I recognized the handwriting in the margin: a neat instruction in blue ink, the same way Margaret labeled everything in her kitchen.

And beside it was one chilling sentence.

If Claire resists, use the incapacity provision.
