Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Believed Me

"I think my husband is stealing from wounded soldiers," I told my friend Tessa Lane.

We were sitting in a diner where the coffee tasted burned and nobody knew our names. Tessa had been an Army medic with me. She was one of the few people who knew what I'd survived overseas, and exactly how long it took to stop shaking when a door slammed.

"Think?" she asked.

I slid the drive across the table.

Tessa studied the invoices on her laptop. Her face hardened. "This isn't sloppy bookkeeping. This is a system."

"What if I'm wrong?"

"Then someone checks. But if you're right, Claire, every day you stay quiet is another day somebody goes without help."

She gave me a number for Special Agent Priya Shah, who was working with federal investigators on possible misuse of military-family charity funds. I called from outside the diner. My hands shook so badly I nearly dropped the phone.

Shah didn't offer easy promises.

"If these records are authentic, we'll need original files, witness statements, and independent bank records," she said. "Do not confront him. And please tell me if you feel unsafe."

I almost said I was fine. It was the answer I'd practiced for years.

Instead I said, "I'm pregnant. He controls most of our accounts. He gets angry when I ask questions."

The silence on the other end lasted one breath.

"Then your safety is part of this case," Shah said.

Tessa reached across the table and held my hand. Not a dramatic gesture. Just pressure, warm and steady.

We spent the afternoon making a plan: a separate account, copies of my medical records, a place to stay, and a lawyer who understood domestic abuse. Shah arranged a formal interview for the next morning.

I drove home after dark. Ethan was on the couch, television flickering over his face.

"Funny thing," he said without looking up. "Luis Ortega called me today. Says you stopped by."

Then he turned the television off.

"So tell me, Claire. Who else have you been talking to?"
