Chapter 6 - The Heartbeat

At the hospital, the first thing I asked wasn't whether my arm could be fixed.
"Is my baby all right?"
The emergency doctor said they had to examine us both. My left forearm had two fractures. A technician eased a monitor over my belly while a nurse cut away the sleeve of my ruined uniform.
For a moment there was nothing but static.
"Please," I whispered. "Please, June."
The technician adjusted the sensor. A rapid heartbeat filled the room.
I broke then. Not loudly. I turned my face into Tessa's shoulder and cried until I couldn't see.
"She's right here," Tessa whispered. "She's hanging on."
The obstetrician explained that the fall and trauma meant I needed observation. The baby looked reassuring on the initial tests, but they weren't taking chances. My broken arm was set and splinted, then scheduled for surgical assessment.
A deputy took my statement. Tessa reminded me that Shah already had a copy of the stolen drive. The auditorium had several camera angles. Ethan had been detained. The general was a witness.
"His mother says I provoked him," I said.
"Her opinion doesn't erase the footage."
He left me a case number and a domestic violence advocate's card.
That evening Margaret called seventeen times. I let every call go unanswered. Finally she sent a message: Your husband has rights. Don't destroy this family over one mistake.
I stared at the words. One mistake. As if a chair could accidentally leap across a stage.
Then a hospital records clerk knocked. "Mrs. Price? Someone tried to access your patient portal using a recovery code. The request came from your home computer."
My stomach tightened.
"What were they trying to open?"
May you like
The clerk hesitated.
"Your advance directive. And a document about who would make decisions for your daughter if you couldn't."
