Chapter 18 - The Other Recording

Brandon had placed the drive inside a locked document box at a storage facility. He gave its location to Detective Cross through his lawyer, along with the access code and a written statement. Cross obtained the recording under the investigation's evidence procedures.
Two days later she told Daniel and me what the investigators had recovered.
The local recording showed Patrick entering the kitchen before the lock turned. He took the key from Brandon, examined it, and returned it. Gertrude showed them the unsigned settlement. Patrick warned Brandon that the trustee had scheduled a meeting with me in the morning.
There was no grand villain speech. No one said, on camera, that they were committing a crime. But they discussed keeping me in the house, telling the transport company I had consented, and making sure I couldn't reach my attorney before the papers were signed.
On another camera's separate audio feed, Gertrude said, "She'll calm down when she realizes there's nowhere else to go."
That sentence stayed with me longer than anything else.
Cross also confirmed a detail I had barely noticed: the kitchen's emergency panel had sent the silent alert to an independent monitoring service still funded by my father's estate. Brandon had tried to cancel the service but lacked authority under the contract. A monitoring employee had dispatched help after an unsuccessful verification call.
"Dad kept one door open," I murmured.
"You pressed the button," Marisol said. "Don't forget who made the call."
The following morning Detective Cross obtained warrants connected to the alleged forgery and financial scheme. Investigators interviewed Gertrude and Patrick separately. Brandon was questioned again, now represented by counsel.

Then Daniel received a message from Gertrude's lawyer.
She wanted to meet me personally, before she entered a plea.
