Chapter 3 - Someone Answered

"Who called them?" Brandon whispered into the phone.

I twisted the faucet open, drenched the towel, and shut off the burner. Smoke still hung beneath the ceiling. The detector remained silent.

Denise was asking questions in the hall. I caught only fragments: "Not our procedure" and "No authorization."

"Abigail," Brandon said, forcing a smile, "unlock the back door and come talk to us."

"You have the key."

"Don't be difficult."

A vehicle pulled up outside. Then another. Blue lights flickered against the glass.

The alarm still worked.

A man's voice called from the front entrance. "County sheriff's office. Who requested an emergency response?"

"False alarm," Gertrude answered instantly. "Our daughter-in-law has been under stress."

I slapped my palm against the door. "I'm locked inside. The smoke detector is disabled. Please send an officer around."

For three awful seconds nobody answered. Then a uniformed deputy appeared at the kitchen window and motioned for me to step away from the door.

"Ma'am, are you injured?"

"No. They want me to sign away control of an inheritance. They brought people to remove me without my consent."

The deputy asked Brandon to open the lock. He refused twice, saying I was unpredictable. Finally, with a second deputy watching, he turned the key.

The hallway air felt cold on my face. Denise stepped back and raised both empty hands. "I was told she'd requested transportation," she said. "I won't touch her."

Gertrude pressed her fingers to her throat. "You're all making a terrible mistake."

"I agree," I said. "But not the one you think."

The deputies photographed the oil, the dark detector, and the papers. The ambulance crew checked my breathing. An officer asked where I wanted to go for the night. I told him anywhere Brandon couldn't follow me.

As I climbed into the ambulance, Brandon reached toward me.

"Abby, I can explain everything."

"Start with why you had a transport company outside our door."

He lowered his hand. "Because the trustee called this afternoon. She wants to see you tomorrow."

Then he added, almost too quietly to hear, "You have no idea what she's found."
