Chapter 7 - The Petition

"Who is he?" I asked.
"I can't tell from that angle," Nora said. "But he came in through the garage. The timestamp is clear."
Daniel requested preservation of all recordings and secured a copy for our civil case. The sheriff's investigator accepted Nora's original export for review. Neither promised me an arrest. Evidence moves more slowly than fear.
By noon we had a new problem.
Brandon had petitioned the county probate court for emergency appointment as my temporary guardian. Attached were Gertrude's sworn statement, a letter from a private evaluator, and descriptions of what they called my escalating paranoia.
One sentence was almost funny: Abigail insists three million dollars has disappeared despite repeated reassurances that the accounts are intact.
I laughed once. Then I couldn't stop shaking.
"Look at the date," Daniel said.
The evaluator's letter was signed at 8:30 the previous evening, forty-seven minutes before Brandon locked me in. It described a crisis that had not yet happened.
"They wrote the ending before the scene," Marisol said.
I wanted to confront Brandon immediately, to ask how someone who once cried at our wedding could file a document calling me incompetent. Daniel stopped me.
"Put your anger into a declaration. The court needs facts, not a fight in a parking lot."
We submitted the hospital evaluation, the deputies' incident number, my work records, and a request for an independent capacity examination. The judge declined to grant emergency control on the papers alone and scheduled a prompt hearing. She also directed that neither party interfere with relevant records.
That evening an email arrived from Brandon's attorney, offering to withdraw the petition if I signed a private settlement.
The attached agreement included a confidentiality clause, a promise not to pursue the Bellwether money, and permission for Brandon to continue living in our house.
At the bottom, under the signature lines, was a small reference to a supplemental memorandum.
