Chapter 1 - THEY SHAVED THE WRONG WOMAN

The buzzing woke me before the pain did.

At first, I thought the sound belonged to a dream. Then something scraped across my scalp, hot and sharp, and a thick strand of my hair slid across my cheek.

I opened my eyes.

My mother-in-law was standing beside my bed with electric clippers in her hand.

Linda smiled.

Satisfied.

“What did you do?”

She lifted the clippers like a trophy. “I fixed your priorities.”

Hours earlier, I had stood inside the Pentagon while senior officers congratulated me on promotion to colonel and command of a strategic Army intelligence unit. Twenty-two years of service had led to that moment.

Linda had turned it into this.

“If you plan to stay married to my son,” she said, “you will resign tomorrow.”

Ryan appeared in the doorway.

His eyes moved from my head to his mother.

He barely reacted.

“Mom probably cut more than she needed to.”

I stared at him.

“That’s what you have to say?”

He shrugged.

“Hair grows back. Maybe this will finally teach you to obey.”

Something inside me went completely still.

Not broken.

Still.

Half my hair was gone in jagged strips.

So I took the clippers from Linda’s hand and shaved the rest myself.

When I came back, Ryan looked horrified.

“What are you doing?”

I smiled.

“You were right. Tomorrow I’m going to devote myself completely to this family.”

Linda relaxed.

“Finally.”

Neither of them heard what I actually meant.

At 2:13 a.m., while they slept, I opened my laptop.

Stopped every automatic payment.

Transferred my emergency savings.

Called my attorney.

Then I received a message from her.

COLONEL CARTER, DO NOT CONFRONT THEM YET. I FOUND SOMETHING IN THE PROPERTY RECORDS.

I opened the attached document.

My husband’s name appeared beside mine.

So did Linda’s.

And beneath both signatures was a mortgage I had never agreed to.

For eight hundred and forty thousand dollars.
