Chapter 9 - THE MARRIAGE THAT NEVER EXISTED

For seven years, I had called Ryan my husband.

Legally, he might never have been one.

The revelation changed everything.

Property rights.

Benefits.

Taxes.

Insurance.

The forged mortgage became even uglier because Ryan had represented himself as my lawful spouse.

Sarah moved quickly.

She filed for a declaration that the marriage was void from the beginning.

That meant I was not divorcing him.

I was proving he had never had the legal status he claimed.

Ryan’s attorney called it “a technical misunderstanding.”

Melissa’s certified marriage record destroyed that argument.

Meanwhile, Linda’s online campaign grew nastier.

She posted that I was abusing military power to punish civilians.

Dangerous.

Unfeminine.

Then she made the mistake of appearing on a local livestream.

The host asked why she shaved my head.

Linda smiled.

“Sometimes a woman needs to be reminded what matters.”

The clip went viral.

Military spouses condemned her.

Domestic-violence advocates condemned her.

The internet did not.

At work, I refused interviews.

I had a command to run.

Then Major Ellis brought me another file.

“Victor talked.”

I looked up.

“Why?”

“He wants a deal.”

“What did he say?”

“That Ryan approached him first.”

“When?”

“Two weeks after your selection board met.”

Before my promotion had even been publicly announced.

“How did Ryan know?”

Ellis looked grim.

“That’s what we’re investigating.”

Selection information was tightly controlled.

But not something Ryan should have known.

Victor claimed Ryan said, “Grace is about to become worth a fortune.”

Not as a wife.

As an asset.

“What did Victor offer?”

“Access to companies willing to pay for insight.”

“And Ryan?”

“He offered you.”

I stared at the wall.

Ellis continued.

“Victor claims Linda pushed the resignation plan because your new command increased scrutiny. She thought if they could get you out quickly, they could use your reputation without the security controls.”

I laughed bitterly.

“They thought shaving my head would make me quit the Army.”

“No.”

May you like

Ellis’s eyes hardened.

“They thought breaking you would.”
