Chapter 6 - LINDA'S STORY FALLS APART

Linda tried to recast herself as the victim.
She told police she had âtrimmedâ my hair during a family argument.
She claimed I had given permission.
Then investigators found the home-security footage.
I had forgotten the bedroom hallway camera.
Linda had not.
The clip showed her entering my room at 1:41 a.m. with clippers already running.
Ryan followed her.
Watching.
At one point, I moved in my sleep.
Linda stopped.
Ryan whispered, âKeep going.â
Only once.
Assault charges were filed.
Ryan insisted he had not touched me.
The prosecutor answered, âYou encouraged it.â
His attorney advised silence.
Lindaâs attorney tried another angle.
âShe was trying to save her sonâs marriage.â
The detective looked almost offended.
âBy shaving a sleeping womanâs head?â
Linda stopped talking.
That afternoon, Sarah discovered a second LLC.
It had received monthly transfers from our joint checking account.
Small amounts.
Easy to overlook.
Seven hundred.
Nine hundred.
Twelve hundred.
Over four years, nearly sixty thousand dollars had disappeared.
I had spent deployments checking bank balances between briefings and trusting Ryan when he said expenses were high.
He had been siphoning money the entire time.
âWhere did it go?â I asked.
âMostly gambling sites, vehicle payments and Victor.â
âVictor again.â
âYes.â
Sarah took a breath.
âAnd Lindaâs medical insurance?â
âWhat about it?â
âYouâve been paying premiums.â
âI know.â
âSheâs also been receiving county assistance based on a claim that she has no family support.â
I laughed once.
Because the alternative was rage.
âFraud?â
âPotentially.â
By evening, Ryan called from a new number.
I did not answer.
He left a voicemail.
âGrace, this has gone too far. Mom made a mistake. I made mistakes. But youâre destroying the family.â
Then deleted it.
Five minutes later, another message came through.
Not from Ryan.
From Victor.

A scheduled text his phone had sent automatically.
If I get arrested, ask Ryan what he promised me in exchange for the colonel.
