Chapter 15 - THE ARREST

Ryan was arrested at 6:20 on a Tuesday morning.
Not for being a terrible husband.
For fraud, identity theft, conspiracy and offenses tied to Victorâs scheme.
Linda was arrested forty minutes later.
She screamed from her driveway that I had orchestrated everything.
A neighbor filmed it.
âI made her part of this family!â
The officer guided her into the car.
âShe owes me!â
COLONELâS MOTHER-IN-LAW SHOUTS âSHE OWES MEâ DURING ARREST.
I did not celebrate.
I went to work.
At 0700, I chaired a threat briefing.
At 0900, I signed personnel actions.
At 3:00, Sarah called.
âRyan wants to negotiate.â
âCriminal case?â
âPartly. His lawyer also wants a civil settlement.â
âWhat does he want?â
âMutual release of financial claims.â
I laughed.
âNo.â
âI assumed.â
âWhat does he offer?â
âInformation about Victor.â
âThat belongs to prosecutors.â
âExactly.â
Ryan still thought everything was negotiable.
He still believed he controlled the board.
He did not understand the game had ended.
That evening, I returned to my house.
Empty.
Quiet.
For the first time in years, no television screamed from the living room.
No Linda criticizing dinner.
No Ryan asking why I was late.
I walked upstairs.
But I could still remember the hair on the pillow.
Then I cried.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
For the marriage.
For the years.
For the woman I had been when I believed patience was the same as love.
Afterward, I stood and opened the curtains.
My reflection looked back from the glass.
Shaved head.
Uniform.
Tired eyes.
Still standing.
My phone buzzed.
General Reed.
âColonel, tomorrowâs command ceremony is confirmed.â
Everything had almost been taken from me.
Instead, tomorrow I would take command.
Then Sarah texted.
One more development.
May you like
Ryan had decided to plead.
But only if he could speak to me first.
