Chapter 17 - COMMAND

Taking command did not magically heal me.
It gave me purpose while healing happened.
My soldiers never asked for details.
Major Ellisâs investigation eventually cleared me of any security wrongdoing.
That mattered professionally.
Emotionally, the damage took longer.
Some nights I woke hearing clippers.
Other nights I dreamed Ryan still had access to my accounts.
I started therapy.
Because intelligence officers believe in accurate assessment, and my own mind deserved the same discipline.
My hair began growing back.
I considered keeping it shaved.
Then I realized that choice belonged to me too.
So I let it grow.
Linda accepted a plea on assault and financial charges.
Ryanâs case was larger.
He pleaded guilty to fraud, identity theft and conspiracy-related offenses.
Victor faced federal charges.
The forged mortgage was voided.
Blackridge released the lien.
My credit record was repaired.
Melissaâs marriage to Ryan was formally dissolved after years of legal limbo.
Ashley sent me a note.
Iâm sorry we met through this.
I wrote back.
You didnât do this.
Neither did Melissa.
The three of us had been placed in competition by people who benefited from our confusion.
We refused the role.
Then Sarah called me into her office.
âThereâs money coming back.â
âHow much?â
âAsset forfeiture and civil recovery. Not everything. But a significant amount.â
âI donât want Ryanâs money.â
âIt was your money.â
That distinction mattered.
I used part of the recovery to pay off my house.
Another part went into savings.
And part funded legal aid for military spouses and service members facing financial abuse.
âYou move fast.â
âIâm done financing bad decisions.â
Then she slid a final court order across the desk.
DECLARATION OF VOID MARRIAGE.
I read it slowly.
Legally, Ryan and I had never been married.
Seven years reduced to one line.
I expected grief.
Instead, I felt air enter my lungs.
Sarah asked, âHow does it feel?â
May you like
I folded the order.
âAccurate.â
