Chapter 17 - THE VOICE ON THE RECORDING

Ruth played the recording once, with Nora and a forensic technician present to preserve its source. Daniel's voice came first: “Miles, I know about the transfers. I have copies.”

Miles answered, “Then go to the police. See who believes you.”

A third voice entered. Beatrice.

“You keep digging,” she said, “and you'll learn how easy it is to lose the things you love.”

There was no confession to causing a crash. Clara hated that. She wanted one sentence that explained why Daniel had died and who, if anyone, had made it happen. Nora refused to let the grief fill gaps in the evidence.

“We have a threat,” she said. “We have concealed records. The investigators can pursue the rest.”

Vega did. The gas-station footage placed Miles's gray sedan near the highway wreck. Graham identified its damaged taillight but did not pretend he recognized the driver. An independent collision specialist reviewing the preserved vehicle photographs flagged unusual damage to a brake component that the original report hadn't addressed.

“Can you prove sabotage?” Clara asked.

“Not yet,” Vega replied. “But the crash inquiry has been reopened, and that's not nothing.”

That evening Clara moved Rosie and Elena to a smaller rented house, away from the estate gates and the pool. Silas installed a simple door camera. The first night, Rosie slept for six straight hours.

At 6:18 a.m. a black SUV stopped outside. Two strangers wearing navy jackets knocked and announced they were there to transfer Rosie for a court-ordered medical evaluation.

Clara kept the door locked. “Show me the order through the window.”

One man flashed a folded paper without letting her read it.

Elena was already calling Nora. Silas zoomed in on the SUV's license plate.

The man at the door lowered his voice. “Open up, Mrs. Bennett. We can do this the easy way.”

Rosie woke and began to cry.
