Chapter 18 - THE FAKE ORDER

Clara stepped away from the door and called 911. She didn't argue, threaten, or go outside. She carried Rosie to the back bedroom while Elena watched the camera feed. Silas spoke to the dispatcher and gave the license plate.
When patrol officers arrived, the two men were trying to leave. They had no court order. Their jackets carried the logo of a private transport company, not a government agency. One produced an invoice identifying North Lake Advisory as the client.
“Beatrice sent them?” Clara asked Nora.
“We know who paid the company,” Nora said. “Let's let the officers establish who gave the instructions.”
Elena sat beside Rosie and sang the lullaby Daniel used to sing. Clara watched her daughter's small hands uncurl. For weeks every morning had begun with a new threat. Today Clara did not feel helpless. Today she had locked the door.
The fake transport incident changed Miles's calculations. His attorney contacted prosecutors about cooperating in the financial and evidence-tampering investigation. In a supervised interview, Miles admitted directing the deletion of the main pool-camera segment and helping arrange the intimidating transport visit. He said Beatrice had insisted Clara would accept a private settlement once she believed Rosie could be taken away.
“Did you know the child could die?” Vega asked him.
Miles stared at the table. “I thought Beatrice would pull her out.”
“Then why didn't you?”
He had no answer.
Miles also surrendered the missing dash-camera case. The original storage chip was gone, but investigators recovered a partial backup from its paired phone account. It showed Daniel confronting Miles about the trust money days before the crash, and Miles threatening to take back the files.
When Clara heard the news, she didn't celebrate. Daniel was still dead. Rosie still woke terrified of water.
But Nora arrived with a new court filing and one quiet sentence:

“Beatrice is about to lose the one thing she's been fighting for.”
