Chapter 19 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

Three weeks after the pool incident, a judge reviewed the authenticated trust amendment and the bank's records. The earlier emergency guardianship allegations had already failed. Now the court barred disputed trust transfers and appointed the independent fiduciary specified in Everett's amendment while the accounting proceeded.

Nora explained the decision outside. “Beatrice cannot use a document your father revoked to control the money. Clara, Rosie's assets are protected.”

Clara looked at Elena. The woman who had jumped into the pool wore the same plain shoes she'd been wearing the day it happened. Her old employer still hadn't restored her shifts.

“Whatever happens next,” Clara said, “you will never have to stand alone in a room full of powerful people again.”

Elena smiled sadly. “Promise me something better. Promise Rosie she'll always be believed when she says she's scared.”

Clara nodded.

Beatrice tried to leave Dallas that afternoon. Investigators, now armed with warrants stemming from the financial records, false filings, evidence deletion, witness intimidation, and pool incident, stopped her before she boarded a chartered flight. Her lawyer told reporters she denied wrongdoing.

Vega later informed Clara that charges had been filed. The exact accusations would be tested in court. Clara could finally tell her daughter that the woman who scared her could not simply walk into their house.

That night, Ruth phoned Nora with another development. A mechanic who had serviced Daniel's SUV shortly before the fatal crash recognized a work order that had been entered under a false account. It instructed an unauthorized inspection of the brake system and listed a North Lake billing code.

For eight months Clara had thought the collision was a cruel accident.

Now an investigator wanted to meet her about the possibility that Daniel had been targeted before he ever reached the highway.
