Chapter 13 - THE MAN I MARRIED

Brooke's statement was thirty-one pages.

Jason had started planning the custody case before Lily's first birthday.

He created the hidden-camera archive.

He asked Diane to provoke me.

He paid North Lake Family Services to collect personal records.

He told Brooke exactly which relatives could be pressured with debt, favors, or family shame.

Diane had been cruel for years.

Jason had turned cruelty into strategy.

I read until I reached a text message between them.

Brooke: What if Emily never snaps?

Jason: Everybody snaps. You just have to learn where to press.

I put the phone down.

Rachel found me sitting in the dark.

"You okay?"

"No."

That was the first honest answer I'd given in years.

I had loved Jason.

Not the fantasy of him. The actual man—or at least the man I thought existed. He made coffee badly. He sang to Lily off-key. He once drove through a snowstorm because I said I missed my mother's chicken soup.

Those memories didn't disappear because he betrayed me.

They became evidence too.

Evidence of how completely a person could be two things at once.

The next morning, Jason surrendered his passport as part of the custody order.

Then the prosecutor obtained his work laptop.

Buried inside was a spreadsheet titled Transition.

Rows listed assets, witnesses, legal steps, and "behavioral triggers" for me.

One column was labeled CHILD RESPONSE.

Under Lily's name, Jason had written:

Separation anxiety useful. Encourage attachment to Diane.

I stared until the words blurred.

Then Naomi scrolled down.

There was a second child's name.

Not Lily.

A boy named Noah.

And beside it:

Prior test case — successful.
