Chapter 5 - THE ACCOUNT

That night, Naomi called me at 11:40.
"Check every account you have."
I opened our banking app.
Our joint savings was empty.
$186,400 gone.
So was the emergency fund I'd built before Lily was born.
Then I checked the college account my father had opened for her.
Zero.
My hands started shaking.
"Jason couldn't touch that," I said. "He wasn't the custodian."
"Who was?"
"I was."
Naomi was silent.
We pulled the transfer records.
The authorization had been made with my digital signature from an IP address inside our home.
Three days before Diane's birthday.
The money had moved into a company called North Lake Family Services.
Naomi searched the Illinois corporate registry.
"Registered agent: Brooke Bennett."
I stared at the screen.
Jason hadn't just prepared for me to leave.
His family had prepared to make sure I left broke.
The next morning, we subpoenaed the bank and froze the destination account.
At noon, a detective assigned to Lily's case called.
"Mrs. Bennett, I need to ask you something uncomfortable."
"Go ahead."
"Your mother-in-law says you coached your daughter to accuse her."
"She's two."
"I understand. She also provided home-security footage."
My throat tightened.
"Of what?"
"You yelling at Lily in the kitchen. Several times."
He sent me a clip.
I watched myself standing over my daughter, shouting, "Stop crying! Stop it right now!"
Only I had never said those words to Lily.
The voice was mine.
The video was mine.
But someone had built a moment that had never happened.
And in the bottom corner, I saw the camera ID.
May you like
CAM-07.
The nursery camera Jason told me had been broken for six months.
