Chapter 18 - THE RULING

We waited forty-six minutes.
It felt longer than my marriage.
When the judge returned, she spoke carefully.
Jason would receive no unsupervised parenting time.
Diane would have no contact with Lily.
All major decisions for Lily would belong to me pending future review.
The court appointed an independent trustee over Lily's shares and barred every Bennett family member from managing the trust.
Then the judge addressed Jason directly.
"You did not merely fail to protect your daughter. You helped construct a system in which her distress became useful to you."
Jason cried.
I didn't.
Outside court, reporters waited because Bennett Packaging had issued a public disclosure about the fraud investigation.
Naomi asked if I wanted a side exit.
"No."
I walked through the front doors carrying Lily.
A reporter shouted, "Mrs. Bennett, do you want revenge?"
I stopped.
"No. I want records that can't be rewritten. I want children believed before adults build excuses. And I want my daughter to grow up knowing silence is not the price of belonging."
That quote ran everywhere.
By morning, three more former Bennett employees contacted prosecutors.
One brought payroll records tied to North Lake Family Services.
Another brought emails showing corporate money had funded private custody investigations.
The third brought something bigger.
A board memo signed by Jason.
It showed the company had reimbursed legal expenses from Noah's case five years earlier.
Bennett Packaging wasn't just near the scheme.
May you like
It had paid for it.
And now the shareholders wanted blood.
