Chapter 14 - NOAH

Noah Bennett was Jason's nephew.
Brooke's son.
He was eight now and lived with his father in Wisconsin.
Brooke had always told everyone her ex had "poisoned" Noah against the Bennetts after an ugly custody battle.
The truth was worse.
Five years earlier, Brooke and Diane had tried to use the same playbook on Noah's father.
Hidden recordings.
Edited arguments.
Paid witnesses.
A claim that he was unstable.
Jason had helped.
They won temporary custody for Brooke.
For four months, Noah lived in Diane's condo.
Then he stopped speaking at school.
A counselor reported concerns. A judge ordered a neutral evaluation. The case collapsed.
Brooke lost primary custody.
The Bennetts buried the details under a sealed settlement.
Noah's father, Eric, agreed to speak with investigators after Naomi contacted his attorney.
He came to Chicago carrying a banker box.
"I kept everything," he said.
Inside were emails, invoices, and an old flash drive.
One recording captured Jason coaching Brooke.
"Don't say he scares Noah. Say Noah becomes dysregulated after transitions. Judges like clinical language."
I felt physically sick.
Eric looked at me.
"They didn't invent this for you. They improved it on me."
The prosecutor expanded the investigation.
Preston Hale's firm appeared in both cases.
So did Dr. Voss's stolen signature template.
Then Eric handed me one final envelope.
"This is why I agreed to talk. Noah drew it when he was three."
The picture showed a little boy behind a door.
A tall woman stood outside.
Above her, in crooked letters, Noah had written:
GRANDMA SAYS DADDY IS BAD.
At the bottom of the page was another figure.
May you like
A man holding a phone.
Jason.
