Chapter 15 - Elaine

We called Elaine immediately.
No answer.
Police in Fort Worth reached her apartment eleven minutes later.
Elaine was alive, shaken, with a cut above her eyebrow. Linda had come demanding the third tape.
But Elaine had moved it years earlier.
"Where?" Ryan asked when she called from the ambulance.
"Safe-deposit box. Your father paid the fee until he died. I kept paying after that."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Elaine's voice broke.
"Because you were seven when I met you, Ryan. Every adult in that house failed you. I didn't want to become another person who used your childhood to destroy your life."
Ryan closed his eyes.
"Keeping it hidden destroyed plenty."
"I know."
The next morning, with police and the bank's legal officer present, Elaine opened the box.
Inside was the third cassette, Frank's original notes, and a sealed letter addressed to Ryan.
Ryan read it aloud.
Son,
If you are reading this as a father, then my cowardice has reached the next generation. I told myself silence protected you. It protected Linda. I am sorry.
Ryan stopped and wiped his face.
The letter described Anna's death, Linda's threats, and Frank's decision to hide evidence until Ryan was old enough to choose what to do.
But Frank had added a final warning.
Linda never cared about money until she learned what the land would be worth. If she comes near your child after my death, do not assume she came for love.
Attached was a property appraisal.
Twelve acres.
Projected redevelopment value: $21.4 million.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
If Linda cannot control Ryan, she will try to control his child.
Ryan stared at the page.
Then Mark's phone rang.
He listened for ten seconds.
"That was the court clerk. Linda's emergency guardianship hearing was moved up."
"To when?" I asked.

Mark looked at us.
"Tomorrow morning."
