Chapter 19 - The Formula Can

The evidence bag held my old formula can.
The one that had disappeared from the garage.
Inside were traces of table salt mixed into residue at the bottom.
The lab couldn't prove exactly when it had been added, but the result was consistent with the high sodium recorded during Noah's emergency-room visit six weeks earlier.
My hands started shaking.
Ryan grabbed the edge of the table.
"She did it before."
The detective stayed careful.
"We can say the container contained salt. We can say Mrs. Mercer possessed the container after it disappeared from your garage. We cannot yet say exactly what she gave Noah that night."
It was enough to make me sick.
Linda had not simply lost control once.
She had been testing boundaries for weeks.
Her attorney advised her not to speak.
For once, she listened.
The emergency guardianship petition was dismissed.
The judge issued a protective order barring Linda from contact with Noah, me, or our home while the criminal investigation continued.
Bennett's development company withdrew its offer within hours of the conspiracy becoming public.
Peter agreed to cooperate.
Elaine turned over every record she had kept.
Tom gave a full statement.
And Ryan did something I hadn't expected.
He moved into a hotel.
"You're leaving?" I asked.
"For now."
"Why?"
His eyes filled.
"Because I knew enough to protect Noah from her, and I chose denial instead. I told myself Mom had changed because I wanted a mother more than I wanted the truth. You shouldn't have to decide whether you trust me while I'm sleeping ten feet away."
I didn't argue.
Before he left, he placed the brass drawer key on the table.
"No more locked drawers."
Then he handed me one last envelope from Frank's box.

It was addressed to me.
