Chapter 18 - Frank's Lie

Tom told us the rest at our kitchen table.

Frank hadn't caused Anna's death.

But after the hospital flagged the case, he used a family connection in the county office to push the final manner of death toward "undetermined natural causes" instead of suspected aspiration.

"He thought he was protecting Ryan," Tom said.

"He protected her," I replied.

Tom nodded. "Yes."

Ryan stared at the floor.

For days he had wanted his father to become the hero of the story.

Now he couldn't.

Frank had been frightened. Loving. Guilty. Cowardly.

Human.

"So Mom had leverage over him," Ryan said.

"For the rest of his life. If Frank reported her, she could expose his interference with the death record."

Mark confirmed it from Frank's notes.

The truth wasn't clean enough to make anyone comfortable.

But it was still the truth.

Police located Linda the next morning at a motel near Love Field.

She didn't run.

She sat on the bed with a suitcase packed and Frank's original blue folder beside her.

Inside was one final document.

A handwritten statement by Frank dated three months before his death.

I altered the path of the investigation after Anna died. I did it because I was afraid of losing Ryan. That decision allowed Linda to escape accountability and gave her power over this family. If harm comes to another child, part of that harm belongs to my silence.

Ryan read the statement without speaking.

Then he folded it carefully.

"I'm giving this to police."

Linda laughed from across the interview room.

"And destroy your father's name?"

Ryan looked at her.

"No. I'm stopping this family from lying for itself."

For the first time, Linda had no answer.

Then the detective entered with another file.

"Mr. Mercer, we found something in Mrs. Mercer's suitcase that concerns your son."
