Chapter 16 - The Hearing

Linda arrived at court in a navy suit with a bruise carefully visible beneath makeup.

She looked like a wounded grandmother.

Her attorney described me as exhausted, impulsive, and violent.

Then Linda cried while explaining how she had "devoted her life" to helping Noah.

I wanted to stand up and scream.

Mark touched my sleeve.

"Let the evidence do the work."

The judge watched the video from our neighbor's camera showing Linda entering the side gate before she officially moved in.

He reviewed Peter Lang's statement about the forged email.

He read the old agreement barring Linda from unsupervised contact with children.

Then came the hardest part.

My slap.

I didn't deny it.

"I hit her," I said. "I was scared and angry. I should have stepped away and called police. But I will not pretend it happened in a vacuum. She had just poured milk over my three-month-old son's face, grabbed my wrist, and reached for him again."

Linda's attorney stood.

"There is no video of that alleged act."

"No," I said.

Then Ryan rose from the bench behind me.

"There might be."

Everyone turned.

He held up his phone.

Our smart speaker had a voice-activation feature linked to the nursery monitor. We had forgotten about it because we never used it.

Peter had recovered cloud audio from the afternoon of the incident.

The judge allowed the clip.

Noah crying.

My footsteps leaving.

Linda's voice:

"You want to waste it? Fine. Wear it."

Then Noah screamed.

In the courtroom, Linda stopped crying.

But the recording wasn't over.

A second voice came through the speaker.

A man's voice.

"Do it now. Make sure Sarah sees."

Ryan turned toward Mark.

"Who the hell is that?"
